Under the direction of Miss Frances Spilman, Divine Mercy Academy’s Music Curriculum for elementary and middle school students is designed to introduce and develop foundational music skills while fostering an appreciation for various musical genres and cultures.
Students will learn to identify and perform basic rhythms, melodies, and harmonies, using their voices and a variety of instruments. The course will also emphasize music theory, including understanding musical notation, dynamics, and tempo, as well as the ability to listen critically and describe different elements of music.
The music of the Catholic Church will be highlighted such as the music of the Mass through the Ages and the music in the Divine Office. The students will sing hymns and songs about Saints and Biblical characters throughout the year.
In addition to performance skills, students will explore the role of music in society and history, enhancing their cultural awareness. By the end of the course, students will not only gain technical music skills but also develop creativity, self-expression, and teamwork through group performances and collaborative projects.
